Valuable experience at the Weta Workshop Internship
The most important experience at the internship was creating connections with Weta designers. Their unique and high-quality work, the importance of characters and storytelling – and its relevant design, discussions, practical working process, challenges and adaptations on new technologies – were all memorable experiences. The internship indicated me the direction I need to go.
Different work environment
The thing that surprised me the most is they make massive efforts to create something that does not exist yet. They created pieces of work focusing on the originality and story-related, rather than showy, eye-catching features. The majority of inspirations were from reality, and the photos and references were placed where everyone can see.
I also visited some places when I needed to be inspired. I did idea sketches at those places, such where the weapon props are made, and the sculpting room. Weta Workshop makes immense efforts to definitize those ideas.
The necessity of the conceptual design competition
Weta Workshop internship was a very special moment in my life not merely being one of the usual internships. That is why I was sad when it was over and thought I should have done more.
It helped me grow up as an artist, and I hope this does not conclude on the personal experience but would lead to a huge development on the area I work at. I also wish Incheon International Conceptual Design competition would become an opportunity to broaden other designers’ perspective of creation. I believe that Korean content industry and Fantasy/SF visions would bring the Renaissance of the industry of Korean culture that would eventually surprise the world.

About the one-month-long internship
The internship schedule had a more solid quality than I expected. I learned a lot from various things – lectures by Weta designers, real project participation, manual and digital painting, 3D software designs, etc.
Impressive features of Weta Workshop
The communication inside the team was very active. I had multiple chances to attend designers’’ lectures during the internship and was impressed by the fact that anyone was allowed even if they were not related to the lecture topic. I also loved the work environment that boosted the designers’ creativity. Numerous sculptures and props were displayed inside the workplace, where I had to stop so many times to see those impressive, eye-catching pieces of work.
The lessons learned from the internship
The most valuable thing from the internship was the memories made with teammates. It was a huge pleasure to meet designers I adored and talk about art. I struggled with the new work environment and my poor English skills but everyone around helped me a lot to finish the internship successfully. I would like to express my gratitude to the people once again.
The necessity of this program
The internship gave me a chance to take a close look at how Weta Workshop has successfully achieved worldwide projects. Multiple designers with various cultural backgrounds came to corporate, inspire, and eventually produce creative outputs and I learned a lot from being inside the process. I thank ifcon and Weta Workshop for this wonderful opportunity. I believe more designers would build their creativity through the experience at Weta Workshop and have an impact on the domestic content creating industry.
